Irresistible Tour de Force of Macao Films and Videos

Featuring Physical Screenings and Creative Exchanges

The Macao Films & Videos Panorama (MFVP) will officially kick-start by the end of this year. Like an array of film events around the world, the MFVP has overcome all sorts of challenges to take place in the physical format with the purposes of presenting remarkable and unique films and videos in the current time, as well as creative ideas. A total of 24 films and videos will be showcased in the MFVP this time, including 11 works subsidized by the Local View Power programme of the Macao Cultural Centre, which is definitely the most important cradle of local film and video productions. The other nine entries are selected from the open call for works citywide, and the remaining four productions are recommended by four local tertiary education institutions to join (University of Macao, Polytechnic University, Macao University of Science and Technology, and University of Saint Joseph). Besides the competition and non-competition screenings, the MFVP also features numerous post-screening sessions, providing a chance for dialogues between local filmmakers and audience. This allows the audience to understand more about the creative concepts behind local films and videos while local filmmakers could receive the audience feedback.

20 Remarkable Local Productions Vying Jury Prize. Selected by Major Curators from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan

Joyce Yang, a veteran film critic from Hong Kong, has been specially invited to be a juror in the preliminary round. Taking up the enormous and important workload, Yang has finally selected nine outstanding works for public screenings from nearly 40 entries. These nine productions, alongside with the works subsided by the Local View Power programme, will compete for the Jury Prize. Given the establishment of the Jury Prize for local productions, key figures in the film festivals in the Greater China region have been invited to be jurors, including: Song Wen, founder of the FIRST International Film Festival in Xining, China; Kattie Fan, Festival Director of ifva Awards in Hong Kong; and Steven Hu, Curator of Fuzhong 15 – New Taipei City Documentary Cinema. The purpose is to review the contemporary film and video productions from Macao through the professional perspective, while the jurors could also provide professional advice for the works.

As the audience and jurors are concerned about different aspects of films and videos, it’s not easy for the works to capture the hearts of the audience, and it’s also the interesting part of watching and analyzing films. The MFVP sets up the Audience Choice Award this year, allowing the audience to support their favorite work by casting a vote.

Creativity and Extraordinary Strengths showcased in Non-competition Works from Greater China Region

Diversity of Productions Recommended by Local Four Institutions

As usual, the MFVP caters the spectacular works from the nearby regions to the local audience and filmmakers, including 11 feature films, short videos and animated short films from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. The diversity of the content, enormous creativity and excellent production quality in these works are inspiring, which we could appreciate and learn from.

There are also surprises in the works from four local tertiary education institutions. Through students’ works, we could take a peek at the horizons of young creators and what they care about. The MFVP also specifically features the Young Jurors Workshop this year, in which local experienced film curators will lead young jurors to appreciate and discuss films. The young jurors could gradually understand more about the characteristics, skills and mindset required for professional jurors, while they will also choose their Best Film. Let’s see what will happen.

Equivalent to the main visuals of the MFVP this year, the movie kid is continuously attacked by the germ kid, but nothing in this world could stop creation. The films and videos of Macao will overcome all sorts of difficulties and continue to be seen.

We will see you all in December!
